An automated inline zinc barrel plating plant, which is to be used for barrel acid zinc plating, is over 31m in length, has a working capacity of 1000kg/h, with a load per barrel of 100/150kg.

A fully automated inline zinc barrel plating plant, formerly used in the UK for high volume barrel zinc plating, has recently been installed at Saayman Danks in Seaview, near Durban, South Africa The company is one of the largest specialist metal treatment companies in South Africa

The project was led by Riley Industries of Birmingham, UK, Europe's leading dealer in Surface Finishing plant and machinery.

It is Riley's largest single order so far from South Africa, having entered the market in early 2005 with the help of UK Trade and Investment and Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

The plant, which is to be used for barrel acid zinc plating, is over 31m in length.

It comprises a total of 24 PVC-lined mild steel tanks.

These include eight zinc plating stations, 12 clear water rinses, hot soak and electro-clean stations, acid dip, clear and colour passivation stations.

The total working capacity of the system is 1000kg/h, with a load per barrel of 100/150kg.

There are three fully automatic transporters with variable traverse and lift speeds.

The flight bar hoist system uses chains for its 'lift and lower' operation and there is a manual override control on each transporter.

The complete process plant assembly and track structure is mounted on a base frame with full plant mounted safety guards.

The transporter system is controlled by an EDUS/Mitsubishi PLC computerised control system, which has been re-programmed for use in South Africa.

This can be switched from fully automatic to semi-automatic and manual mode using the individual joystick controls on the transporters for non-standard and maintenance functions.

The plant also includes two heavy duty centrifugal dryers.

An overhead swing jib crane hoist enables 2 x 150kg loads to be dried simultaneously, allowing for non-stop processing.

The entire plant has recently been shipped from the UK, installed at Saayman Danks and commissioned with the combined effort of engineers from Riley Industries and Saayman Danks themselves.

Commenting on the new installation, director John Danks said: "We were introduced to Riley Industries through their recent membership of the South Africa Metal Finishing Association.

As a result of that introduction, Saayman Danks has been fortunate to acquire a large, modern and sophisticated barrel plant for a small fraction of the price that it would have been when new.

We are pleased with both the quality of the equipment and the excellent service that we have received from Michael Riley and his team.".
