Centreless grinding to very tight tolerances
The need to hold roundness tolerances within one micron and surface finishes of 0.2 micron Ra on aluminium spools sparked a search for the most cost-effective centreless grinding process.
The project covered the installation and commissioning of some 19 machine tools over an intensive four-day period in August 2004.
Presenting the award of an engraved crystal vase and a cheque for GBP 500 to Sarah at the Wolfson laboratory, John Schwarz, managing director of RK International acknowledged her ability to design, make and assemble such a complex device that had high levels of practicality and was built to a high standard.
He said: "Sarah is proof that engineering is a subject full of interest and the widespread use of computer technology across all areas of manufacture makes it a fascinating and rewarding career for young people.".
