Soft start protects massive conveyor
system
Fluid couplings allow heavy duty conveyor motors to reach full speed in about a second and then provide gradual and controlled acceleration to the machinery.
Hydrastart fluid couplings, manufactured by Renold Clutches and Couplings of Cardiff, have been chosen to protect the huge conveyor systems delivering coal to the furnaces of a Malaysian coal-fired power station Moving coal at a rate of up to 3,300 tonnes per hour the conveyors are driven by huge 300kW electric motors the size of a small family car
The Hydrastart couplings allow the motors to reach full speed in about a second and then provide gradual and controlled acceleration to the machinery.
They also provide overload protection without any complex electronic controls.
Should an overload occur a fusible plug blows releasing the coupling's oil, which disengages the motor from the driven machinery.
Restarting the coupling is simple - the low-cost fusible plug is replaced, the oil is refilled and the coupling is operational again.
