Until recently, DeviceNet connectivity had only been available with larger PLCs, but the launch of the 1769-SDN means OEMs and machine builders can now take advantage of the DeviceNet open fieldbus network.
Instead of hard wiring every device or sensor back to a central controller, DeviceNet allows up to 64 nodes to be daisychained on a single wire, with all devices and sensors connected to the network able to exchange messages with each other.
This means a dramatic reduction in control wiring, quicker set up and improved productivity for the OEM, plus easier reconfiguration and rapid diagnostics for the end user.

DeviceNet also integrates with the higher level networks ControlNet and EtherNet/IP to form a seamless enterprise-wide communications system.
Depending on the amount of I/O data required, two or more 1769-SDN scanner cards can be connected to a single MicroLogix 1500, providing a high performance, yet low cost control solution.
The scanners give the PLC standard DeviceNet master functionality, allowing it to initiate or receive messages over the network and support change of state, cyclic, polled and strobed message services.
The 1769-SDN can operate simultaneously as a master and slave, allowing its I/O data to be shared by another master while it is acting as master to a number of different slave devices.
Enabling both backplane and explicit messaging, the scanner allows MicroLogix 1500 PLCs using the 1764-LRP processor to be programmed over the network, freeing the controller's communications port for other uses such as barcode readers, weigh scales or printers.
Native DeviceNet get/set messages can also be sent or retrieved from any MicroLogix 1500 control program to any other device on the network.
The 1769-SDN is supported by RSNetworx, the most versatile and powerful DeviceNet configuration tool available, enabling users to easily set and store parameters.
The MicroLogix 1500 is ideally suited to applications from 24 to 156 I/O and is programmed using the powerful easy-to-use RSLogix 500 software.
The controller also shares many features with the larger SLC 500 products, including the programming environment and instruction set.
The digital and analogue I/O expansion complements and expands the capabilities of the base controller.
MicroLogix 1500 also features memory modules, a real time clock, 32-bit signed integer maths, and more than 7K of configurable memory.
Combined the new 1769-SDN scanner card, the MicroLogix 1500 is an ideal alternative to embedded devices for machine control, process, materials handling and distributed control applications requiring multiple networked controllers and high speed local control with shared data.
