The manufacturing of long medical and surgical tools for grinding has historically been a challenge for toolmakers, but a horizontal magazine loading system does the job in one clamping.

The manufacturing of long medical and surgical tools has historically been a challenge for toolmakers Most tool and cutter grinders have loading and length limitations often forcing the operators to hand load each piece

Often the maximum length was limited to 12in for many standard systems.

Rollomatic has developed a horizontal magazine loading system for the GrindSmart 620XS.

This fully-automated 6-axis CNC Super Precision Grinding Center is capable of manufacturing rotary cutting tools medium to micro-size in carbide, HSS and other material in one clamping.

The grinding range is diameter 16.0mm (5/8in) down to diameter 0.1mm (0.004in).

The machine comes complete with the VirtualGrind 3-D simulation software, which includes a library of tool programs and the ability to create new programs using drag and drop options.

The simulation program also includes a 3D tool preview which allows the Toolmaker to produce tools with minimal to no scrap.

The 620XS includes special machine functions to produce medical and surgical tools, including but not limited to medical drills, taps and reamers.

The magazine loader allows automatic loading of tools up to 16in in length with a 1,000 piece capacity for 'lights out' operation.

Also featured in the system is a special V-block/steady rest for long tools.

The half round flute support is inserted into a special holder which mounts to the standard steady rest holder.

This supports the entire length of the flute during the fluting process and eliminates deflection while increasing rigidity during fluting.

The result is increased grinding rates and reduced cycle times.
