A longer shelf life and what is claimed to be a unique dosing system are the key benefits of a new pack custom-designed and manufactured by RPC Containers for pbi Home and Garden.

A longer shelf life and what is claimed to be a unique dosing system are the key benefits of a new pack custom-designed and manufactured by RPC Containers for pbi Home and Garden The container has been developed for Phostrogen Plant Food, a soluble fertiliser that can be adversely affected by moisture

Research showed that consumers typically store the product in sheds or greenhouses, a concern for the existing cardboard packaging, so pbi looked towards a more durable, moisture-proof format that would guarantee extended shelf life.

At the same time, pbi wanted to add further value to the pack with a new, integral measuring system that would maximise both the accuracy and user-friendliness of dosing.

RPC said its design office developed the brief in to a workable concept in close collaboration with pbi and the resulting design took advantage of RPC's cross-site working capability, by utilising the specialist manufacturing expertise of the group's sites at Market Rasen and Raunds in the UK.

The flip-top closure, injection moulded at RPC Market Rasen, uses what RPC claimed to be a unique dosing system to ensure that an accurate measure is delivered every time.

The system comprises two interlocking chambers, in to which the measure falls when the closed container is turned upside-down and back again.

Once 'charged' in that way, the consumer opens the lid and pours - the pouring action itself automatically prepares the next measure.

The one litre container is blow moulded in HDPE at RPC Raunds.

Fully airtight and waterproof, the stylish design stands out on shelf and is enhanced by large pictogram labels that describe the dosing technique said RPC.

In addition to Phostrogen Plant Food, the RPC container is being rolled out to other products within the Phostrogen and Top Rose ranges.

Colin Golding of pbi said: "This is an attractive, easy-to-use pack, which adds value for both retailers and consumers.

The technical ingenuity and stylish appearance demonstrate RPC's commitment to realising our requirements.".
