* Direct quenching - new developments at Ruukki allow wear plate materials to be produced by direct quenching.
The steel is rolled and then hardened in-line as part of a single integrated production route.
Ruukki told manufacturingtalk that direct quenching is a more efficient and controlled process.
It produces an excellent surface finish that doesn't require shot blasting to remove excess scale caused by re-heating.
Ruukki has installed direct quenching technology in its strip mill and its reversing plate mill, allowing Raex wear plate to be produced across a wide range of sizes at the same high quality.
Before, Ruukki produced wear plate in two stages: after the initial hot-rolling operation the plates were then subjected to a separate heat treatment.
From its base in Raahe, in the north of Finland, Ruukki have long had a reputation for being a reliable, high quality producer of steel grades for demanding applications.
