When a local primary school visited Rockware Glass, the UK's largest glass bottle and jar manufacturer in Knottingley, the children not only learned how glass is made, but that it should be recycled.

The visit included a study session at Rockware's education centre, called 'Glassforever'.

The centre uses national educational curriculum based material to demonstrate the need to recycle.

Rockware said that over the festive season the UK will consume almost 5.5 million jars of mincemeat, 12 million jars of pickles and 6.5 million jars of cranberry sauce, all packaged in glass, but only a small percentage of the packs will get recycled.

The weight of all those jars is equivalent to the weight of 59,500 Santa's, weighing an average of 18-stones each.

And if all those glass jars were recycled, it would save enough energy to boil water for 60 million cups of tea.

Between 20 per cent and 30 per cent more glass containers are collected over the Christmas period in the UK.

Whilst European neighbours recycle over 90 per cent of their glass packaging, the UK recycles 44 per cent.

Rockware added that recycling jars, as well as bottles, can help increase that figure.

Thirty-two per cent of all UK glass containers are made from recycled glass and recycling just one jar or bottle saves enough energy to power a television for 20 minutes, or a 100watt light bulb for almost an hour.

Glassforever's Joanne Hollins told the visiting children: "The great thing about glass is it can be used again and again to make more bottles and jars, so after the celebrations don't bin your glass, bank it at your local bottle bank.

And remember to carry on recycling throughout the year." The children were keen to help Rockware encourage people across the country to bank and not bin their festive food jars and bottles this Christmas, as part of a national campaign to increase glass recycling, said the company.

The youngsters brought along posters they had designed to show why we must all recycle this Christmas, and promised to take the message back to their families and friends.
