For the drilling of aerospace heat resistant 'super alloys', Sandvik Coromant has introduced a drill, which is claimed to give maximum efficiency in repeated short hole drilling.

Sandvik Coromant's CoroDrill Delta-C R846 drill for hole-making in heat resistant 'super alloy' is designed for continuous and reliable production in these materials, which heavily load the drill's cutting edge Sandvik Coromant said it has optimised the geometry of the CoroDrill Delta-C drill to gain maximum efficiency in repeated short hole drilling

The cutting edge geometry has a more consistent curve for added strength in outer corners where cutting forces can be at its highest.

Sandvik Coromant told manufacturingtalk that the geometry distributes the cutting forces evenly over the cutting edge to give an even wear without sudden changes.

The CoroDrill Delta-CR846 has improved cutting action iproducing a more secure and longer tool life for reliability from drilling the first to the last hole on expensive components, such as gas turbine parts.

The deep flute shape on the drill body optimises chip removal from the cutting zone, keeping the drill free from obstructions that would otherwise damage the integrity of the component's surface.

Sandvik Coromant said that the result is a continuous, precise cutting action that can be repeated with the same close tolerances 'hole after hole'.

The standard CoroDrill Delta-C family has tools for 3 - 12mm diameter, with a length of three to five times diameter.
