Schenck balancing machines are being used by Rolls Wood Group (Repair and Overhauls) to service and repair power turbines and gas generators.

Rolls Wood Group (Repair and Overhauls), a joint venture between Rolls-Royce plc and Wood Group, has chosen Schenck balancing machines to service and repair Rolls-Royce RB211, Avon, Olympus and 501 series power turbines and gas generators As part of a major investment programme, the Schenck balancing machines have been installed in a new purpose built facility at Rolls Wood Group's Aberdeen site to serve customers in the international oil and gas and power generation industries

Rolls Wood Group has purchased a range of Schenck balancing machines to balance components from RB211, Olympus, Avon and 501 series engines.

The balancing machine is often referred to as the heart of the turbine facility, and almost every process can have an effect on the final balance condition.

The CAB measuring unit has additional features designed specifically for the balancing of turbines.

Some operations, which could take up valuable time and require intricate knowledge and experience, can now be performed easily by utilising the CAB's special features.

More than 500 staff are employed at Rolls Wood Group worldwide.

The company has service bases in Aberdeen, Scotland; Houston, Texas; and San Leandro, California.

"The new balancing facilities are a critical part of our ongoing expansion to stay at the forefront of our industry and we wanted to work with a strong partner that could support us both now and into the future," said Mark Paterson, RB211 Operations Manager at Rolls Wood Group.

"Schenck is recognised as a leader in balancing technology and part of a global engineering group.

Our new HM Series Schenck machines provide us with the functionality, performance and reliability we need." In a further contract win for Schenck, Wood Group Light Industrial Turbines ("Wood Group LIT"), another part of Wood Group based in Aberdeen, has also purchased a HM 5 UBU balancing machine to overhaul smaller industrial turbines.

Graeme Wilson, Production Manager at Wood Group LIT, said "I have been involved with turbines for many years and the balancing of these engines is paramount to quality and efficiency.

This facility is responsible for servicing Siemens (Alstom) TA, TB, TD and Tornado gas turbines.

Wood Group is a global company which is known worldwide for turbine overhaul.

When we purchase new equipment we want to be sure that it's a long term investment and that the quality of the equipment reflects our commitment to stay at the forefront of turbine overhaul.".
