Case packing lines increase production
by 40%

Eight case packing lines have increased production by up to 40% and reduced operating staff by 25% at a wallpaper factory and the payback period may be as little as two years.

Sealed Air (Bradford), global supplier of shrink packaging equipment and materials, has recently completed the final stages of a major project for Graham and Brown, one of Britain's foremost wallcovering manufacturers Graham and Brown, who supply wallcoverings to most major and smaller retailers, including B and Q, Focus and Homebase, has purchased eight Mondo and Scagilone case packing lines from Sealed Air for its Blackburn factory, in Lancashire

The first line was installed back in February 2005 and the final two in June.

The machines are operating at the end of four separate lines and are being used to pack rolls of wallpaper in various batches into cardboard boxes.

Prior to the installation, the rolls were manually packed at operating speeds of four boxes per minute.

The machines can handle 27 rolls per minute and are capable of processing up to seven boxes per minute - a production increase of up to 40%.

Operating staff has been reduced by 25% and the company anticipate the payback period to be as little as two years.

Head of engineering at Graham and Brown, Blackburn, Tony Conroy, explained what problems the company were facing and why it invested in the Mondo equipment: "The UK wallcoverings industry is highly competitive and we recognised that if we wanted to remain competitive and move the business forward we needed to increase production and improve quality by investing in new technology and equipment." Continuing, Conroy explained why the company chose Sealed Air as its supplier: "I considered eight additional quotes from competing companies but I had worked with Gary Wilson (sales manager of Sealed Air) previously so felt confident in the design and quality of build in the machines he had to offer." Conroy spoke of how Sealed Air overcame a major installation problem: "The factory floor space is very large but I anticipated the low ceiling would create a problem and that I would struggle to find a supplier with the expertise to implement the installation".

"It required a huge amount of planning and consideration but I was impressed with Sealed Air's plans and after months of preparation, all eight lines have been successfully installed." And when asked about the benefits the equipment has brought to the company so far, Conroy added: "The case packers have automated the wallpaper line, which has seen production increase and reduce the number of staff on the factory floor".

"Not only are we producing more cases per hour but the quality of the boxes is consistently high, which has also been recognised by our customers." "Both the Sealed Air team and the Mondo and Scagilone people have given 100% into this project".

"Like all machines, we have experienced some minor teething problems but Gary has always responded quickly and resolved any hiccups".

"All in all I could not have asked for a better service or quality of machine," Conroy concluded.

Graham and Brown employ around 400 staff at its Blackburn site and manufacture a number of highly recognised wallcoverings.

Brands include Super Fresco, Easy Decor, Hemingway and Texture, among others.
