Easy open solution launched into UK food sector

A Sealed Air product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Nov 2, 2005

Leading packaging specialists, Sealed Air , has introduced into the UK food sector an innovative and revolutionary new form of resealable packaging.

Sealed Air's Easy Open Reseal bags have a built-in recloseable feature using pressure sensitive tape to create an easy-open, easy-close package, which provides product containment and protection, and has been proved to be easier to use than zips.

Easy Open is ideal for a variety of food items, including fresh produce, bread, cheese and confectionery.

A built-in teartape along the length of the package is used for the initial opening which reveals the resealable flaps.

Unlike some systems there are no tracks to line up and no 'zip' to operate and the pack simply presses back together, whilst it can be re-opened many times without compromising the adhesive's performance.

Sealed Air introduced Easy Open into the UK bakery market where it has been successful with Allied Bakeries, which now operates five of the Easy Open applicators for its flowpack lines that pack a wide variety of confectionery products.

Easy Open is straightforward and convenient to use, as well as being completely resealable.

The packaging in addition to being very user friendly, also cuts down on waste, keeps products fresh and provides tamper evident security.

In the factory, Easy Open can be applied to any horizontal or vertical flowpacking line with Sealed Air's specially designed applicator that takes the place of the film unwind systems associated with either type of wrapper.

Subject to a standard Sealed Air site survey, the applicator is completely compatible with any flow wrapping equipment with minimum disruption and would possibly only require an extension to the infeed conveyor.

It also does not affect line-running speeds and can even be used on gas-flushed packs.

Easy Open Reseal can be used with any standard polypropylene film found on any horizontal or vertical flow wrap system and, subject to individual pack design, would not require packs to be altered.

''People prefer packages that are easy to open,'' says Sealed Air's operations manager, Colin Lovering, as he and his colleagues set out to alert the UK to this exciting new solution.

"And with continued heavy investment amongst food producers striving to meet consistently high consumer demand and increased expectations, Easy Open Reseal is the next logical development for packaging in this sector.
