Market surveillance for EU RoHS
requirements

SGS has offered help to manufacturers endeavouring to ensure products comply with the market surveillance process required by the RoHS directive.

The market surveillance process required by the RoHS directive has started in several EU countries RoHS market surveillance uses the same procedures as the supervision processes for safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of E and E products

The steps involved are education, check of documents and testing, which in the case of RoHS includes screening with XRF-techniques and chemical analysis.

Reaction procedures are also similar to those used for the supervision of other characteristics and include limitations on selling the product, removal from the market and financial penalties.

Several EU countries, such as Finland or the UK have already started their RoHS market surveillance and others will be starting the process in the very near future as RoHS is already since July 1st, 2006, limiting the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products.

SGS can support companies in ensuring that their products are RoHS compliant.

This is achieved through training, screening, analysis and quality management, which can be done simultaneously with other compliance checks, ie in combination with safety and EMC testing and certification. Request a free brochure from SGS ...
