Thai RoHS standard on the way

A SGS product story

SGS will offer testing and certification services to Thailand when its version of the EU RoHS comes into force, which is predicted to be April 2007.

The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) is expected to circulate a draft RoHS standard for consultation starting on the 19th of February.

The draft will stipulate substance limits similar to EU RoHS laws.

Thai RoHS is likely to rely on self-declaration and not require mandatory labeling.

It might, however, require producers to provide, on demand, a risk assessment for each product and the steps taken to contain the risks.

The substance limits will be mandatory only for certain products which will be selected after the standard has been agreed upon, probably in April 2007.

It is expected that the products affected will be the same as those covered by Japan's J-Moss standard.

As a mandatory standard, Thai RoHS will not require further legislation to be enforceable.
