Offering a 'total manufacturing solution', Shearline Precision Engineering has recently invested GBP 40,000 to expand and enhance its UK assembly and finishing area.

Shearline Precision Engineering, one of the few UK engineering companies that offer a 'Total Manufacturing Solution', has recently invested GBP 40,000 to expand and enhance its assembly and finishing area at its 57,000ft2 factory in Ely, Cambridgeshire The new facility, covering a total of 5,148ft2 (assembly - 3,755ft2 Finishing - 1,393ft2), features the latest electrostatic discharge (ESD) rated flooring and benches to eliminate any possibility of damage to sensitive electronic components during handling and assembly

Used for electromechanical assembly and prototype production of products and components for world-class clients (a number of which are based in or around the Cambridgeshire area) in markets as diverse as scientific and medical instrumentation, information and communications technology and commercial inkjet printing, Shearline's experienced assemblers will also benefit from a robust yet flexible layout based on Kaizen principles and designed to require minimal set-up and improve production flow.

Graham Smith, Shearline's managing director comments, "Our philosophy has always been about achieving fast and efficient operation and turn-around times for our customers whilst maintaining the highest quality production standards.

The new assembly and finishing area has enhanced this aspect of the operation by allowing us to work with full ESD capabilities to produce high quality components, manufactured and delivered to the tightest deadlines with the utmost efficiency." The assembly and finishing area also features one of three Kardex vertical storage systems, which have been installed throughout the factory.

The Kardex Shuttle NT is fully automated and increases efficiency, control and security.

Standing at 8.5m high and holding 74 trays, the system is used for storing finished goods and assemblies and takes up a mere 61ft2 of floor space but gives 1,205ft2t of storage area.

Shearline has also increased its manufacturing and engineering capabilities following the acquisition, in August 2005, of Hybrid Laser Tech, a precision laser cutting company in Cambridge.

Utilising Coherent Everlase CO2 laser systems, Shearline now provides precision cutting and scribing of ceramic substrates and precision cutting of thin metals, wood, paper, plastics, acrylics, PCB and PZT.

The acquisition is a positive step forward and will enable both companies to further strengthen relationships with clients on a national and international level by offering value added services and continuing to meet customer demand.
