Innovative non-contact safety sensor is designed to monitor the closed position of hinged, sliding or removable guards and allows machines to continue running if non-critical faults occur.

Schmersal Safety Systems has introduced an innovative non-contact CSS 180 Safety Sensor and matching coded CST 180 Actuator, designed to monitor the closed position of hinged, sliding or removable guards When used in continuous processes the CSS 180 allows machines to continue running if non-critical faults occur, whilst issuing a warning to the machine's control system

This facility enables vital processes to remain operational while necessary adjustments are made.

However, if a guard door is opened the CSS 180 immediately stops the machine.

The new sensor meets Control Category 4 requirements and can be wired in series, allowing a "Daisy Chain" up to 200 metres long to be created without affecting the Control Category 4 status.

The safety sensor and actuator function by the sensor producing a signal to the actuator at a predetermined resonant frequency as it approaches.

The sensor then reads back the actuator's oscillation, evaluates the frequency and its own distance to the actuator, and interprets the identification of the actuator as a closed guard.

The safety outputs are then enabled.

The CSS 180 also fulfils the requirements for proximity devices to EN 60947-5-3 with the classification PDF-M (self-monitoring) and was developed using the latest IEC EN 61508 standard as a guideline to ensure universal compliance to international safety standards.

It can therefore be used in SIL 3 applications to IEC 61508.

Sensor and actuator are very compact with versatile mounting options, enabling them to be easily fitted in any position on any machine guard.

The non-contact units, which compensate for misalignment in a safety guard system, are also encapsulated and vibration-proof, and are therefore ideal for harsh, dusty or dirty environments.

They provide IP 67 protection.
