Two Schmersal safety products have received design awards from the 2005 Industry Forum Design Hanover, which recognises the importance of optimising safety components.

Two Schmersal safety products, the newly released AZM 200 solenoid interlock (interlock switch with guard locking) featuring pulse echo technology and the BNS-B20 safety door-handle switch, have received design awards from the 2005 Industry Forum Design Hanover, which recognises the importance of design in optimising the operation and functionality of safety components The AZM 200 solenoid interlock offers mechanical engineers an ergonomic solution to door guarding problems by providing non-contact monitoring of the guard door's position

It is slim, symmetrical design is ideal for installations using 40-45mm aluminium profiles and is also available with an integrated door handle for machine and perimeter guarding applications.

Schmersal's newly developed pulse echo sensor technology eliminates alignment problems by allowing the actuator and interlock to engage even with an offset of +/-5mm.

By increasing machine availability through the use of integrated electronics, the AZM 200 also reinforces Schmersal's commitment to producing safety products that not only meet appropriate regulations but also increase the efficiency of machines and processes.

The other award winner, the BNS-B20, combines an ergonomic door handle with a safety sensor that is installed in the handle unit.

This innovative solution, which means that the safety function is discreetly concealed, allows mechanical engineers to save both time and money by installing a single component.

This year's double win follows awards in each of the previous two years - one for Schmersal's range of hygienic push buttons and the other for its range of SRB safety relay modules.

Commenting for Schmersal, UK managing director Terry Hayward says that whilst design is not an end in itself, it is closely related to the function of all Schmersal components.

He adds that the elegant design of the award winners is evidence of the joint efforts of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and industrial designers.

The iF award is judged by panels of international jurors and is acknowledged for its major role in evolving industrial design for more than 45 years.
