CNC toll and cutter grinder simulates
too
As well as grinding standard tooling, a 5-axis CNC tool and cutter grinder has software for any 'specials' that can effectively simulate the tool and saves enormously on set-up time.
Having had much success with Walter Helitronic Power CNC 5-axis tool and cutter grinders at M R Tool (Atherstone), UK, the company has acquired its sixth model from Korber Schleifring UK of Honiley near Kenilworth The new machine has a Walter Discloader to allow unmanned operations in the evenings and at weekends

In replacing an 11-year-old pre-Helitronic Walter tool grinder, M R Tool had no hesitation in selecting another Helitronic Power.
"It fitted all of our criteria," explained production director Doug Pugh.
"It was available, it was a good price, it was proven technology and it came with a Discloader - so we also saw it as a way of increasing business." Warwickshire-based M R Tool runs two shifts and utilises its new 40-piece Discloader - for tools up to 160mm long and 32mm diameter - to fill the gap between midnight and 7 am, ensuring production operates 24h/day.
Pugh also mentioned operator familiarity and commonality of tooling among other reasons for acquiring the machine.
"We can use our existing programs," he said, "And we can make use of existing hardware such as collets, nosepieces and probes." The machine offers 11.5kW of power and rapid traverse rates of 15m/min in all linear axes plus 120 deg/s on the rotational axes.
The machine can accommodate tools up to 350mm long (300mm for face grinding) and 320mm diameter.
It has been set to work manufacturing round shank carbide and HSS slot drills and end mills for customers in the aerospace and automotive sectors.
M R Tool also uses it to produce its entire range of taper die sinks, as well as a selection of its application-specific cutters such as Woodruff, T-slot, dovetail, corner rounding and counterboring tools.
"In addition, the machine's Cyber Grinding software is very useful for any 'specials' we encounter," continued Pugh.
"We can effectively simulate the tool before we put any cutters on, which saves enormously on set-up time." He concluded: "Many jobs we do would take two hours extra if we didn't have Cyber Grinding.
In an age where the competition from Korea and China is increasingly fierce, every saving is a godsend.".
