Spindle speeds up to 50,000 revs/min can now be customised on a VMC for drilling with ultra-fine tools down to 0.1mm diameter while pere-hardened steels can be finished at high speeds.

Spindle speeds up to 50,000 revs/min can now be obtained on the Fanuc Robodrill Alpha T21 D-Series following a customised package development by 600 Centre of Shepshed This development, in conjunction with the machine's Auto Intelligence (AI) contour control, Nano contouring technology and Jerk control option with fast response servo motors, enables ultra-fine tools as small as 0.1mm diameter to be used

In addition, hardened steel typically used by the mould and die sector can also be milled or ground using the high spindle speed within a single production cycle of the vertical machining centre.

The totally silent, high speed spindle matches perfectly the short cycling ability of the T21 D-Series Robodrill which has a slideway acceleration of 1.5G to 54m/min rapid traverse.

It has 1.8s chip to chip tool change via the 21 position magazine.

With a BT 30 taper, 195W electronic drive to power the high speed spindle and supplement the standard 5.5kW spindle, speeds between 2,000 revs/min and 50,000 rev/min are fully programmable from the Fanuc 16i-MB control.

This enables exact cutting speeds to be applied to tools between 0.1mm and 3mm diameter.

There is also a larger tool option which enables tools up to 6.3mm diameter to be used.

The drive to the high speed spindle is mounted on the machine column, alongside the normal spindle position with the spindle unit and tool holder carried in the 21 position indexing magazine.

The tool and spindle is engaged by the tool changer with the high speed spindle drive which includes automatic connection to the power source and air which provides independent air feed mist lubrication to the cutting zone.

When the tooling unit is held in the magazine, a special cover is automatically applied to the connection point to prevent ingress of swarf or coolant.

Available in three versions, all with Z-axis travels of 330mm, the ultra-compact D-Series has 300mm travel in X and Y with 630mm by 330mm table.

The standard D has a 500mm X-axis and 400mm Y-axis with 650mm by 400mm table and the extended capacity DL version has a 700mm X, 400mm Y and 850mm by 410mm table.
