Wire EDM machine uprated to cut quicker
Fanuc has extended the capacity, specification and performance of its Robocut Alpha-1iA wire cut electro discharge machine (EDM) to provide high accuracy performance cutting at up to 300mm2/min.
Fanuc also said that it has increased machine rigidity by 40% and reduced mechanical parts by 35% - with the addition of twin-servo wire tension control - compared with its predecessor.
Fanuc will launch the 'D' series of Robocut Alpha i wire EDM at EMO 2007 in Hannover, Germany.
The machine will also be available from 600 Centre of Shepshed near Loughborough, UK.

The 'D' series of Robocut Alpha i wire EDM can be specified in a compact 370mm x 270mm in X- and Y-axis strokes or 600mm x 400mm respectively and in three types.
These are the Fine Wire and Standard and a separate lower cost production machine version, which does not have automated wirefeed.
Every machine version has the latest Fanuc FS 310 is/WA control with 15in LCD screen and touch panel.
The contol system provides easy to use twin-screen display giving an individual scaling mode around the wire position.
The user can also program the machines on the screen at a rate some 10 times faster than with the previous C-Series wire EDM.
The latest control has the ability of the wire position cursor to automatically follow the machining path.
A special OiD version can also be specified with 5-axis simultaneous control.
It works in conjunction with a touch trigger probe that provides a fully automated process ideal for polycrystalline diamond tooling cutting jobs.
Fanuc has redesigned the 'D' series wire EDM's casting structure with a large bed that eliminates any table overhang.
The working structure is some 40% more rigid than the model it replaces.
With the enlarged capacity in X and Y, the maximum workpiece size is increased to 700mm x 600mm with the Robocut Alpha OiD.
The larger liD machine has a 1050mm x 820mm.
An automatic drop-down door gives improved access to the working area.
By adopting a twin-servo wire tension control, any variation in wire tension is reduced to a quarter of the previous machine design.
The system maintains precise control over the wire diameter.
Wire diameters range from 0.05mm to 0.3mm.
A very simple wire feed system requiring lower maintenance attention has resulted from reducing the number of mechanical parts by 35%.
Fanuc has also incorporated servo control over dielectric fluid levels enabling optimised cutting to be maintained for different thickness of workpiece.
The level of fluid automatically follows the Z-axis position over the 255mm stroke on the OiD and 310/410mm on the larger IiD machine.
By incorporating a new design of automatic wire feed based on an air jet, operational time is reduced to 10s saving some 16% from the previous machine wire re-feed time.
