Vertical machining centres and 'combination' CNC lathes offer high specification and machining capability available at an affordable price.

The 600 Centre, based in Shepshed, UK, will be showing a selection of Dalian vertical machining centres (VMC) and CKE combination lathes at the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition * VMCs - out of six models in the Dalian VDL Series of VMCs, developed to a strict specification and quality audit by 600 Group PLC's resident engineers, the VDL 1000 will be under power on the 600 Centre stand to demonstrate the new benchmark for high specification and machining capability available at an affordable price

The 600 Group specification centres on a heavy duty cast structure giving a net weight of 7 tonnes and to that is added the latest GE Fanuc OiMC control with Manual Guide i software, an 11kW, 40 taper spindle.

There is also a 24 position magazine with twin-arm tool changer and swarf conveyor.

In addition, to meet customer specific requests, a CNC rotary table and through spindle coolant, can be supplied as an option.

Central to the heavy duty performance of the VDL 1000, with table size of 1120mm x 560mm and 750kg loading, is the combination of linear guideways on the X- and Y-axis and heavy duty hardened and ground boxways on the vertical Z-axis.

This combination gives the benefits of high rigidity when milling and 24m/min rapid traverses for the table over its 1020mm x 560mm travels in X and Y and 18m/min rapid traverse rate over the 600mm Z-axis.

The 11kW Dalian IBAG spindle has in-built cooling and a speed range from 60 to 8,000 rev/min.

It is supported by a twin-arm tool magazine able to exchange tools weighing up to 7kg and 77mm diameter by 305mm long in 4.5s.

The standard specification includes a full flood coolant flushing system, close circuit heat exchanger on the electrical cabinet, rigid tapping and the 4 Star assurance package from 600 Group on quality specification, European standards of build audit and full after sales support.

* Combination and CNC lathes - representing the most powerful and largest capacity, in the six machine Z-Series of CKE combination lathes from Dalian will, said 600 Centre to manufacturingtalk, set a new standard for affordability and performance at MACH 2008, will be the first UK showing of the 22kW, 800mm swing, high performance CKE 6180Z CNC lathe.

This machine is intended for demanding industries such as those related to the oil and gas sector or requiring heavy shaft machining and need a highly flexible turning machine.

The Dalian CKE 6180Z features the OiTC, the very latest in operator friendly control systems from Fanuc with Manual Guide i conversational programme assist software.

The control is mounted in an ergonomically located travelling housing that provides the ideal operating position anywhere along the Z-axis.

Providing the high functionality required for general purpose machining and small batch cycles, fast data input is achievable through direct drawing dimension programming to complement the combination of high build standards and a heavy duty cast iron construction of the machine gives ultimate levels of rigidity.

Maximum advantage for power cutting can be taken from the spread of the 550mm wide bed and the range of optional centre distances of 1000mm, 1500mm, 2000mm, 3000mm and 4000mm.

This capacity is ideal for heavy duty shaft work, said 600 Centre, enabling machining under full automated cycle CNC using the four position horizontal electric turret or optional six position vertical turret.

A geared headstock provides four speed ranges and spindle speeds between 40 and 1,000 rev/min.

These can be selected for manual turning or under CNC program control.

For fast positioning, 8m/min rapid traverse is available in the Z-axis and 4m/min in the X-axis.

As with each machine in the 600 Group's Dalian range, it carries the Group 4 star Assurance package of top quality specification, compliance with European standards and has been factory inspected by 600 Group engineers.

Once installed, full after sales support is assured.

There are a wide range of options to suit the specific tasks users could need when using such a powerful lathe.

A choice of Pratt Burnerd super high precision chucks, a PARAT 4-way toolpost and a complete range of steadies and faceplates is available as well as a high pressure coolant system.

* 600 Centre at MACH 2008, NEC, Birmingham, UK, April 21-25, Hall 5, Stand 5130.
