Degreasers clean 'as required', not 'as possible'

A Shell Lubricants product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 20, 2004

For a long time metalworkers have been settling for finished pieces being 'as clean as possible' but with this new range of degreasers, finished pieces can be 'as clean as required'.

Shell Metalworking Europe has developed a state-of-the-art range of degreasers to compliment its market leading range of metalworking lubricants.

The new range of degreasers, Shell Callina, will allow Shell to offer an integrated fluid solution for the whole production process.

Comments Stephan Treuer, Product Manager for Shell Metalworking Europe: "This range of degreasers will allow Shell to take care of the whole metalworking production process.

We will be able to supply the correct degreaser to clean the workpiece that has been cut or formed using metalworking fluids.

For a long time metalworking organisations have been settling for finished pieces being 'as clean as possible' but with this new range of degreasers, companies will be able to have finished pieces 'as clean as required'." The Shell Callina range includes specialist degreasers for inter-stage process degreasing and final process degreasing.

The range, which has been developed using the latest technology, complies with all legislation (including the volatile organic compounds (VOC) law), and surpasses all health, safety and environmental requirements.

This product range is available on a global basis.

Experiences in the field have showed a number of benefits when compared to their previous degreasers including increased bath life, increased sump life and reduced process temperatures, significantly reducing waste and costs.

The Callina range includes hydrocarbon based degreasers, aqueous degreasers including neutral, alkaline, strong alkaline, and emulsion.

The typical cleaning process involves several stages including wetting, emulsification/suspension, chemical reaction, mechanical action and heat.

In order to develop the correct cleaning solution, Shell application specialists conduct a detailed analysis of the applications involved in the production of the workpiece, the products used, the surrounding environment and the actual workpiece.

The Shell specialist then identifies the point of weakness of the 'soil' on the workpiece and adds the correct degreaser (solvent, reagent, emulsifier or dispersing agent) to remove the 'soil'.

Continues Treuer: "It's crucial that the company providing the degreasers has a full understanding of all the fluids involved in a particular process.

Only in this case you can develop a degreasing solution with high clean finish quality." Shell Metalworking Europe consists of three specialist metal working companies - Shell Macron in Germany, Shell JP Industries in France and Shell Sinol in Italy.

Shell provides, on a European wide basis, a complete range of fluids - developed to meet specific metal working related production process needs, and formulated to deliver consistent performance for the highest quality work.
