Oil company to grow steel plant
maintenance share

Shell International is targeting a US$2bn a year prize by focussing on becoming the leading provider of integrated services to the global steel industry.

"Shell International is targeting a US$2bn a year prize by focussing on becoming the leading provider of integrated services to the global steel industry," comments Mike Portlock, Shell's Industrial Markets Manager Shell, currently the market leader in the provision of hydro-carbon based fluids and fuels to the steel industry with an estimated market share of 15%, is looking to capitalise on its excellent reputation to enhance its products and services proposition

Shell's service offering to the industry will focus on the areas of fluid management, reliability maintenance, energy management, environmental services and health and safety.

Shell's confidence in its ability to provide these services stems from the company's proven ability to develop similar services and maximise profitability at its own operations globally.

Shell has also been working closely with progressive global companies in the steel industry for the past four years, successfully piloting their new offering.

Shell believes that the average steel plant spends hundreds of US$ millions a year on maintenance, the largest spending US$800 million a year, of which fluids accounts for only five percent.

Shell's move into services is aimed at capturing a large share of the difference.

This move towards becoming an integrated service provider is one which Shell's traditional competitors are yet to make.

Mike Portlock comments: "Shell realises that in offering new services and products to the steel industry it will be facing competition from non-traditional competitors. Request a free brochure from Shell Lubricants ...

However, Shell believes that its strength lies in the fact that no other supplier to the steel industry can offer all the products and services in a one stop shop way.".
