Overview Arguably one of the most significant developments in recent years is the rise of tape storage in comparison to disk storage as the best means to address backup, performance and storage management in business

Many companies already believe that the incorporation of cost-effective automated data recovery in their operations is crucial to the viability of their business.

These companies are in the forefront of an ongoing trend to automated tape storage systems that have the ability to incorporate the highest capacity tapes available in the market.

Industry Recommendation.

Leading industry analyst firms such as Gartner Dataquest have predicted that: "As disk capacities continue to grow with the explosion of digital content and mission-critical data warehouses, the tape storage segment has a bigger opportunity to close the gap between disk and tape roadmaps.

For a tape product to be successful, capacity, performance and automation support are key." A new generation of tape drives and libraries The introduction of Sony's S-AIT, the first tape drive to break the 1TB capacity barrier and currently the industry's highest capacity data tape technology, provides a new benchmark for cost-effective tape storage.

Its new S Series PetaSite tape library systems based on its S-AIT technology are designed to meet the growing storage requirements of mid to large-sized enterprises and set a new standard for automated tape storage density.

In its maximum configuration the S Series PetaSite library system can house up to 96 drives or up to 2988 cartridges providing a total scalable native capacity from 30 terabytes (TB) to 1.5 petabytes (PB).

Sony Commentary.

Mark Lufkin, General Manager of Sales and Marketing for OEM IT Peripherals within Sony Business Europe's Storage Solutions division will be able to discuss why a new tape platform, and the automation of that platform, is required in order for tape to remain competitive against disk.

He will also be able to discuss Sony's commitment to meet industry demands for 1TB of uncompressed capacity per cartridge before 2005 by offering additional solutions based on its AIT technology.

Further commentary will also be available from Sony's technology partners already using S-AIT - Matsushita (Panasonic brand), Qualstar and Spectra Logic.

Sony @ Storage Expo.

At the show Sony will be launching the first branded, external S-AIT drives.

The Sony PetaSite S Series tape libraries based on S-AIT technology will also be on public display for the first time.

Additionally Sony will show its innovative series of NAS based fileservers and Backup Appliances from its StorStation range and launch its "Professional Disc for Data", the first data storage product based on its blue laser optical storage technology with 23.3GB capacity.

Last but not least, with the future of DDS in question, Sony will also be discussing how its AIT technology can provide SME's using DDS an effective migration path with increased reliability, speed and capacity for a similar per gigabyte cost.

Sony Business Europe's Storage Solutions division is a key provider of personal and business data storage solutions and recording media.

Products include Sony StorStation tape drives, autoloaders, libraries and backup appliances based on AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape), S-AIT drives and DTF-2 tape drives which form the basis for Sony's enterprise PetaSite automated library solutions.
