Revised storage saves 430 working days a year
New storage infrastructure has reduced the distance packing ring parts travel around a shop floor by 30%, which initially extrapolated to saving 259 days per year, more savings followed.
It was built to house 1,600 employees in 50,000m2 of space.
It took months for RR to prepare the relocating and organising of storage for new equipment and 'transition teams' were formed to organise the move.
These teams made the practical arrangements for the plant and consulted System Store Solutions, the supplier for around 50% percent of cabinets and shelves at the facility.

'One-stop storage shop' set up at Autosport
System Store Solutions has teamed up with Bri-Store Systems to exhibit a 'one stop storage shop' for both quality workshop equipment and in-vehicle racking systems at the Autosport International show.
Ian Whittaker volunteered on the CDD (Casing Disc and Drums) transition team: "The CDD team consists of me and seven others," explained Whittaker.
"We worked with a 'detail design' team for a number of months before making arrangements for machine moves.
The design team decided on layouts for Sinfin D and made requests for cabinets, tools and consumables, but the rest was up to us." Whittaker's team planned to transport a number of old cabinets and drawers from the main works building, but not all of the storage was suitable for use at the new facility.
RR has greater capacity at Sinfin D and production is increasing, so the CDD transition team had to provide a large amount of additional storage.
The team carefully researched the best available options before making a choice about storage supplies.
"We had to shop around for suggestions and prices.
We knew System Store Solutions because the Shafts transition team had already ordered some cabinets from the company.
We investigated these products and decided to order from the same supplier," said Whittaker.
The storage needs included workshop tool cabinets, shelving, filing cabinets, drawers and other equipment.
The 'detail design' team's list of items gave details of products that had been listed for use by a number of different teams, and the CDD team had to search to locate similar supplies.
Dean O'Neil, a sales representative from System Store Solutions, helped the team to find suitable items together with storage options that exceeded expectations.
Before completing the order list, Dean O'Neill visited the Sinfin D site to fully assess the needs of the team and to offer his expert advice.
All the cabinets had to be hardwearing and robust and shelving had to be strong enough to support extremely heavy fixtures.
Once the order had been confirmed, equipment was delivered on time and installed within a week.
"So far, the new storage has enabled us to organise the whole area," said Whittaker.
"All tools have been given specific locations and items are a lot easier to access.
A certain amount of storage is still going to be transported from the old plant but the majority of machines have new cabinets and the new factory has a much cleaner appearance.".
