Lubrication system increases
productivity at Corus
At MACH 2002 in Birmingham, Corus Panels and Profiles was given a demonstration of SMV's system for the efficient application and metering of thin lubricants and other low viscosity liquids
Up and until the time that Ian Humphries, Production Engineer at Corus Panels and Profiles visited the SMV Presses (UK) Ltd stand at MACH 2002 in Birmingham, the Company was using garden spraying equipment to apply lubricant to the material, prior to rollforming, onto coils using a felt roller and it had to be done manually This did not allow them the flexibility to adjust the quantity, which varies from material to material

Refurbished presses run progressive tooling
To replace its ageing C frame presses, a Cumbrian press shop invested in three fully re-furbished presses that now enable it to run complicated progressive tooling with full confidence.
Leaflets describe comprehensive press range
Four new leaflets cover mechanical presses, pneumatic presses, manual bench presses and small workshop presses for marking, numbering, riveting and crimping.
The quantity used on galvanised steel is greater than on coated steel.
At the show, Ian was given a demonstration of SMV's Multi-Lube, a system for the efficient application and metering of thin lubricants and other low viscosity liquids and saw immediately a product that could be adapted to solve his lubricant application problems.
He discussed what he was looking for with SMV engineers and between them a new variant of an existing product was born.

Bench presses have vertical safety screens
Bench mounted pneumatic presses have been equipped with manually operated vertical safety screens, allowing the cycle to automatically start only when the screen is in the down position.
Press quickly boosts motor body output
A 150kN inclinable mechanical press has very quickly boosted the production of motor bodies for fans used in domestic central heating systems.
Ian said: "I could see it was just the product I had been looking for and with the excellent co-operation of the SMV Engineers we designed and produced a product that has been absolutely marvellous for us.
It has saved us around 50% in lubricant costs, it has increased productivity and improved product quality as well as making our working environment more healthy and cleaner, with no more air born lubricant mist" Corus Panels and Profiles are based in a new purpose build building, which they moved into during February 2003.
Located just off the M5 at Tewkesbury, they are already producing up to 35,000 tonnes of panels and profiles per annum on 7 rollforming and profiling lines using UK produced steel and aluminium coil.
They produce about 26 different profiles, in lengths of around 16m, even though they have made panels up to 27m in length.
These profiles are used for industrial roofing, cladding, decking and flooring, mainly in the UK.
Ian continued: "At first we took one system on trial and within months, because it had worked so well, we placed an order for a further three.
Today all our lines are equipped with the SMV Multi-Lube lubricant application system.
We use an emulsion mix of 90% water with 3% Techdraw XLS lubricant, which is applied using a 1500mm wide coil lubricator and we are able to finely adjust the amount of lubricant applied depending on the material being formed.
Currently we are manually topping up seven 16-litre containers with lubricant, which we buy in pre-mixed, but soon we will have a ring main installed with two high capacity storage tanks allowing us to do the mixing and automatically feed each system, giving us even more substantial savings.
On top of everything, the service we have received from SMV Engineers has been very good and I must say that this Multi-Lube system is very easy to maintain." The SMV Multi-Lube system is an ideal product for the metering and application of lubricants and other liquids onto coil strip and tools used in automatic and manual stamping, pressing, bending, drawing and deep drawing operations.
