Press quickly boosts motor body output

A SMV Presses (UK) product story

A 150kN inclinable mechanical press has very quickly boosted the production of motor bodies for fans used in domestic central heating systems.

A 150kN mechanical EMG press recently supplied by SMV Presses (UK), the Coventry based power press and ancillary equipment manufacturer has very quickly boosted production at Sifan Systems , Witney, Oxfordshire, of motor bodies for fans used in domestic central heating systems.

Greg Etter, Manufacturing Engineering Manager said: "The application we got this press for, is to put the two parts of our steel motor bodies together".

"They are pressed together like a jigsaw puzzle".

"When we first started producing our new more efficient motors, we actually commissioned a special purpose machine to put the body together, but with all new products things can change and our design was altered slightly making the machine specification not strong enough to press the parts together".

" We were entering full production so we had to use what was around us, which was a pneumatic press, but we struggled with getting all our tooling to fit the working height as well as the force to press the parts together".

"We were able to produce our 19mm, 25mm and 32mm packs on the pneumatic press, but the 38mm pack we had to produce on a 40 ton (400kN) hydraulic press".

"It was so slow it actually delaminated our motor packs".

" We looked around for an alternative press and I had remembered seeing this 15 ton mechanical press on the SMV stand during 'Metalworking 2002' at the NEC, Birmingham".

"At the time I was impressed with the specification, so I contacted SMV's Mike Hall and arranged for one of my colleagues to see it operating in a working environment".

"He actually took a set of our tooling with him to see if it would fit".

"It did".

"This was June 2004 and we then decided to put forward our procurement requirement and the order was placed earlier this year and we took delivery a few weeks back".

"Since then our production has been boosted considerably with all the four motor bodies being produced on the one press".

"At first, we were thinking of having lightguards fitted, but the screen guards on the press are so fast and efficient, there was no advantage to having them".

"We are very happy with the press and our operators have found it so easy to use, that we have had very little training from SMV.

We just did not need it".

" We know that because of its efficiency and speed of operation, we will have spare capacity and we are now looking at other products that could be assembled using it." This 150kN press, which has an electro welded, E36-3 stabilised steel frame has a 20 deg inclinable base, a clearance height of 300mm, a swan neck depth of 180mm and can operate at up to 140 strokes per minute.

The adjustable stroke is 8mm to 72mm.

SMV Presses UK is the UK representative for the French based EMG Presses, who manufacture a range of presses used in numerous industries including watch making, jewellery making, frames for glasses, electrical appliances, automotive parts, white good equipments, toys and locksmiths.
