The forthcoming UK annual Southern Manufacturing Show offers a free seminar programme that provides an accessible focal point of enginering/manufacturing knowledge sharing.

As the country's top engineering, sub-contracting and manufacturing SMEs gather for the 10th annual Southern Manufacturing Show, Feb 6 and 7, 2008, the sharing of knowledge and showcasing of new ideas will be uppermost on many delegates' agendas, said the organisers The Southern Manufacturing Show's free seminar programme provides an accessible focal point of knowledge sharing, open to everyone

Combining practical guidance on issues affecting engineering business today with insights into the trends that might influence its future, the presentations are delivered by acknowledged experts in their fields and tailored to the needs of the smaller enterprise.

Topics addressed as part of this year's programme will include the following.

* Innovative approaches to adapting the ideas of Six Sigma and Lean Thinking to an SME environment.

* An examination of some practical techniques that can help businesses succeed in new product development.

* Benefits of sustainable improvement programmes for smaller organisations.

* Skills necessary to implement improvement programmes effectively.

Technical discussions will include an illuminating look at the development of rapid prototyping and tooling technologies, together with the effect they may have on manufacturing in the future.

Visitors will also be able get an update of the latest legislative requirements to affect engineering, together with practical steps businesses can take towards compliance.

Presentations on how to become a supplier to the aerospace and autosport sectors will provide an insight into the best ways to approach these buoyant and lucrative markets.

Demonstrating engineering innovation of a more pragmatic - not to say entertaining - variety, visitors will also be able to meet the engineers behind Laffin Gas, an incredible drag car powered by rocket technology developed entirely in-house.

This will be the first time the car has been shown at an exhibition, giving visitors plenty of opportunity to learn about rocket motor engineering at close quarters.

Styling themselves the 'Fred Dibnah's of rocket science', the Laffin Gas team has made impressive progress in developing its homespun hybrid rocket technology to the point where it is a highly effective, clean-burning and comparatively safe propulsion system, ideally suited to drag racing.

The hybrid rocket motor developed by the Laffin Gas team uses the unlikely combination of cardboard and cooking oil, which is burnt in a high-pressure stream of Nitrous Oxide gas to create a hypersonic exhaust flow.

Using the unique bio-fuel solution developed by the team, Laffin Gas's four engines are theoretically capable of developing an incredible 12,000 lbf of thrust - more than enough to propel the car to record-breaking velocities.

The car and the team will be on display at Southern Manufacturing, together with some of their home-developed rocket motors.

Attendance at all the seminars and displays within the Southern Manufacturing Show is free and open to all visitors and exhibitors.

However seminar places are limited and demand is expected to be exceptionally high so pre-booking is essential.

Visitor pre-registration for the event and seminars, together with full event information, is available online.
