Having spotted a demand for large-scale EDM that was being worked by only a few competitors, Central EDM decided to invest in a machine specifically to produce larger dies.

Investing in a new Sodick 750 wire erosion machine has proved a profitable decision for Birmingham-based Central EDM This well-established sub-contractor already had an impressive array of six Sodick wire eroders when it decided to invest in a model that could tackle larger work-pieces

Managing Director, Greg Simmonds, explains, "We are a general sub-contract shop, but a substantial proportion of our work is for automotive.

We spotted a demand for large-scale EDM that was not being addressed by many of our competitors, so we decided to invest in a machine specifically to address this market," One of the first jobs that the new machine was used for was a 1 tonne press tool car panel, which was machined in D2 tool steel and required continuous working for three weeks.

"This was a real test of the 750," says Greg, "and it came through with flying colours.

Without our new machine, we would not have been able to quote for, or successfully complete, the work.

We work with a wide variety of materials from titanium for aerospace, through aluminium, brass, copper and of course tool steel for applications such as this.

In our business you need to be able to offer the customer the widest range of options.

Our new Sodick machine puts us among one of only a handful of companies who have the equipment and expertise to offer such large-scale EDM facilities.".
