Linear motors ensure accurate wire EDM contouring

A Sodi-Tech edm product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Nov 18, 2003

Linear motors boast perfect linearity and extremely low vibration producing high contouring 4-axis precision as linear motors ensure all axes respond in perfect synchronisation.

Sodick's new AQ750LH sets new standards for cutting large, heavy work-pieces as demonstrated by its new LQ 3D control, the linear motors on the X, Y, U and V axes, maximum loading weights of up to 3000kg and the extreme machining height of 500mm.

The worktable is integrated into an extremely stable die-cast construction that forms the basis of the machine.

This prevents the performance data of the AQ750LH from being influenced by either the weight of the work-piece or load fluctuations in the area of the worktable.

As a result, the linear motors are able to take full advantage of their dynamic qualities and precision in the X (750mm) and Y axis (500mm) as well as in the U and V directions (770 and 520mm respectively).

In addition to these features, the linear motors also boast perfect linearity and extremely low vibration.

But the most impressive feature of the AQ750LH is its contour precision - especially with the 4-axis programmes, in which the linear motors ensure that all axes respond in perfect synchronisation.

Like all new Sodick EDM machines, the AQ750LH takes full advantage of the new 3D LQ control, thereby opening up the world of the 3D Q3vic Solution to the area of large-scale tooling.

Via an interface, 3D solid data can now be transferred directly from the CAD system to the LQ control, and analysed from there using special software that converts it into process data.

Thus, for the first time, users can take advantage of a continuous, three-dimensional process chain from design to production, eliminating the time-consuming detour caused by CAM systems and abstract 2D data on the machine.

Actual process control is carried out using the Sodick Motion Control System.

This is a specially developed process-control architecture (comprising a circuit and software) that realises a closed regulating system.

SMC monitors the spark gap directly and passes on regulating commands to the linear motor controls in real time - without having to slow down and record the spark parameters as in earlier machines.

This ensures the fastest possible reaction times and guarantees highly precise positioning.
