3D CAD/CAM linked EDM run with 'lights
out'
EDM machines linked with 3D CADCAM systems allows mould and die maker to run in automated 'lights out' 24/7 mode, reducing lead times and accommodating late design changes
Pickering, UK-based Ryetool, has been specialising in the provision of precision engineering for the plastics industry for over 16 years - and has been relying on Sodick EDM machines for most of that time The family firm employs a team of multi-skilled and experienced craftsmen manufacturing mould tools for high volume production parts, primarily for the automotive sector

Automatic EDM wire feed system cuts lead times
The high-speed, sensor-controlled, automatic wire feed system on its latest wire EDM is really reducing lead times for multi-aperture work at a spring maker.
Managing director, Darren Hugill, explains; "We work for all the big automotive names and these days what they are really looking for is reliability, flexibility and quick delivery from their suppliers.
Our in-house design ability, using the latest 3D CADCAM systems and linked to machining facilities which include the three Sodick EDM machines, allows us to run in automated 'lights out' 24/7 mode, reducing lead times and accommodating late design changes." Ryetools' main area of expertise is in plastic injection mould tools involving complex, accurate and highly detailed cavities, including hot runner, insert and over-moulding tools.
Development, prototype, modification and repair work is also regularly undertaken on tools up to 3 tons.
Hugill believes the Sodick machines are 'way in front' of the competition.
After purchasing his first EDM machine ten years ago, he has continued to invest in the latest technology, adding a further AQL325 linear machine after three years (one of the first such machines in the country) and making up the current trio with the latest AQL 525, providing the company with the ability to machine larger parts.
He is also a confirmed user of genuine Sodick consumables, which he purchases from KHS-Europe in Coventry, as he says; "It's not worth the risk of using anything else.".
