Possibly the largest machine of its kind in the UK - with a cutting area of 700mm x 1100mm - has been installed at a subcontractor to EDM-drill angled-holes in plastics moulds.

Birmingham-based A and M EDM has added to its extensive array of Sodick machines with a new, specially designed driller from Sodi-Tech The company already owned ten Sodick machines, so it knew where to turn when looking for an innovative solution to what was becoming a growing requirement - the need to cut angled holes in large workpieces

With two linear motor Sodick AQ750s and an EPOC 1100 with a cutting area of 700mm x 1100mm - possibly the largest such machine in the UK - A and M has geared up to tackle the large jobs which are forming an increasing proportion of its workload.

Director Mark Winfield explains the rationale behind the purchase of the new machine; "We had looked at the angled hole-drillers available on the market, but none of them offered the flexibility we were looking for, specifically the ability to handle jobs that overlapped the work table, while varying angle of the head".

" The design that Sodi-Tech has created provides us with maximum manoeuvrability which is critical for productivity." A and M had been discussing their need for such a machine with Sodi-Tech EDM for some while and have been delighted with the result, which has proved to be very economical and has greatly increased productivity by allowing jobs to be done with a single set-up - so increasing accuracy, while cutting time and reducing the possibility of error.

The machine was in operation immediately upon installation and carried out GBP 3,000 of work within the first couple of weeks.

It has recently been used for the manufacture of a 1000 x 800 x 200 mm plastics injection mould tool weighing 700kg for the plastic boot-liner of a prestige saloon car and A and M anticipate its use in many of the company's larger jobs.

Winfield comments; "A and M can often do in 24 hours work that it would take our customers a week to do, and in days what they would do in weeks".

" We have the capability, the expertise and the technology - and this new machine gives us further additional capacity to tackle the jobs that our customers want to outsource.".
