Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Sep 27, 2005

With an astonishing specification including spindle speeds of up to 125,000 rev/min, the high speed drilling machine is ideal for mould polishing, small hole drilling and fine slot machining.

Flown in especially for its world debut at EMO 2005, the new Sodick Kagayaki machine is yet another technology breakthrough from machine-tool market leaders Sodick Corporation.

With an astonishing specification including spindle speeds of up to 125,000 rev/min, the Kagayaki is ideal for mould polishing, small hole drilling and fine slot machining.

The machine itself weighs in at a substantial 2000kg, to provide stability, while providing users with a maximum work-piece weight of 40kg, using tools with a maximum tool shank diameter of 4mm and a maximum tool cutting edge diameter of 1mm.

Standard accessories include a cooling unit for each axis, scale feed back systems (X/Y/Z) semi dry cutting system, ethernet communications (10BASE-T/100BASE-TX) and automatic lubrication system.

Additional options include a 16 tool automatic tool changer, an automatic tool diameter/deflection measurement system with a measurement resolution of 0.1 micron and a measurement accuracy of +/- 1 micron and an automatic non-contact optical type tool length measurement function to the same resolution and accuracy.

The NC system offers simultaneously controllable XYZ axes with a minimum setting unit of 0.0001mm and a minimum displacement unit of 0.0001mm.

NC functions include machine co-ordinate system setting, tool length compensation, tool compensation memory and high speed, high accuracy control software (SEPT).

Work samples have included small hole drilling to 0.6mm thick quartz glass plate - holes of 0.4mm diameter pitched at 0.3mm in grid pattern, with a positioning accuracy +/- 1 micron and a cutting time of 20.3s/hole and fine slot machining with a slot width of 0.2mm and a slot depot.5mm a Z-axis cutting depth of 2 micron and a feed pitch of 2 micron.
