Large linear motor wire EDM introduced

A Sodi-Tech edm product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Sep 6, 2006

To meet the growing demand for producing larger dies, a large linear motor wire EDM machine providing an ultra-high-rigidity structure, owing to its novel column-drive method.

In response to the growing demand for large dies, particularly in the automotive sector, for example for instrument panels and bumpers, and electronics, for flat screen television systems, Sodick has created a new large linear motor wire EDM machine.

The AQ900L, developed from the very successful AQ750L, utilizes the latest and largest in Sodick's wire EDM technology and features optimised 3D design using CAE analysis.

The AQ900L Premium offers the smallest footprint of machines of its class, while still providing an ultra-high-rigidity structure, due to its unique column-drive method and the integration of both electrical and mechanical equipment in one unit.

An optimum rib arrangement based on the latest design technology ensures a machine that can handle even very heavy workpieces.

The machine also incorporates Q3-vic software, allowing users to directly import 3D solid models with error free data conversion, optimised CNC programming (with no detours) and reduced set up procedure.

This ease of use saves time and costs while eliminating operator error, the machine can be immediately put into operation without the need for additional programming.

The extra large tank and increased work volume, can cope with really large work-pieces without the need for any compromise.

Machines also include high accuracy linear motors with Sodick motion controller on X,Y,U and V axis - a feature unique to Sodick, and a 'Thermal Multi Fit System; capable of coping with a large temperature change of the work environment, supporting high-precision machining even under a temperature fluctuation of 10 deg C.

A wide variety of machining shapes can be achieved due to the AQ900L's high-thickness machining capability, supported by Sodick's 'Tension Servo Function', and its ability to apply stable electrical discharge for a wide variety of die shapes, providing efficient machining in a minimum number of cuts.

Sodick has recently developed the revolutionary 'Taper Flex' advanced taper compensation software.

By using Taper Flex it is now possible to achieve high accuracy on large taper areas and to greatly improve surface finish for wide angles.

Taper Flex is available as an option on the AQ900L Premium.

The AQ900L makes fully continuous, automatic and high-precision machining possible, thanks to the standard equipment of a wire feeder and L-cut (cutting-type wire discharger) that accommodate a wire electrode coil up to 20kg in weight, a new high-speed automatic wire threader (AWT) specially designed for thick workpieces and a new triple filter and an improved quick fill and drain tank has increased filtering capacity for longer autonomy.

As there are no ball screws, belts or couplings in the machine, backlash is completely eliminated, offering several advantages, including improved positioning and cutting accuracy, while providing smooth and vibration free table movement.

* Dimensions and capacity of the AQ900L are as follows.

Maximum travel of X,Y,Z axes - 900 x 600 x 400mm.

Maximum travel of U, V axes - 920 x 620mm.

Maximum machining size (width x depth x height) - 1200 x 900 x 400mm.

Maximum weight of workpiece - 2000kg.

Machine tool dimensions (width x depth x height) are - 2380 x 3150 x 2395mm (including power supply unit and service tank).
