Automatic EDM wire feed system cuts lead times
The high-speed, sensor-controlled, automatic wire feed system on its latest wire EDM is really reducing lead times for multi-aperture work at a spring maker.
Like many UK mould and press tool manufacturers, Delen Tooling has in recent years turned its attention to precision subcontracting.
Although small (five employees) the company houses an impressive array of machine tools at its facility near Woking.
In the past nine years the company has invested in four Sodick EDM machines (three wire and one 1KC hole drill).
Now, to improve its spark erosion capability, Delen has acquired a new AQ35L from Sodi-Tech EDM.
"We needed to update our sparking technology to embrace CNC," said managing director Phil Brown.
"It will help us fulfil our titanium machining commitments to our Formula One customers.
Titanium is notoriously difficult to spark erode - it requires a lot of power to blind spark, plunge spark or achieve a decent form.
However, on test cuts with the AQ35L we sparked a 25 by 5mm rectangular pocket through 38mm thick titanium in just three hours - without start holes or pre-milling." Brown said he would not have attempted this operation using his existing spark eroders, particularly without pre-milling.
Delen Tooling is happy to deal with work from one-offs and prototypes to large quantity batches.
"Although we are small, we realise the importance of investment," he concluded.
"Machines such as the AQ35L will help us remain competitive in what is an extremely tough marketplace.".
