Potteries mould and die company has purchased a wire EDM and tan EDM hole driller to expand into the automotive, aerospace and advanced ceramics sectors.

The Potteries Die Co a manufacturer of moulds and press tool equipment with a strong reputation in specialists dies for advanced ceramics, has purchased additional Sodick EDM machines from Sodi-Tech EDM Based in Norton, Stoke-on-Trent, Potteries Die was established 70 years ago and worked with some of the UK's most reputable pottery companies

Much of the once thriving UK pottery industry has moved overseas so Potteries Die was motivated to diversify into new sectors.

"The experience and skills that we developed for work in the ceramics field, in particular precise design and the use of high quality materials, has really helped our transition into new sectors", explains Potteries Dies managing director, Bob Dunleavy.

He said: "On the basis of a fresh assessment of current market opportunities and our existing manufacturing processes, we have just purchased two new Sodick machines, an AQ300L wire machine and the K1CS hole driller".

"This has enabled us to further benefit from opportunities in the automotive, aerospace and advanced ceramics sectors as well as maintain many of our original contacts in the potteries industry." Dunleavy continued: "Whilst we were originally working solely with dies for ceramic refractories, we now produce dies and tooling for forming a wide range of different materials including steels, plastics, ceramics, rubber and even wood".

He added: "Having the latest precision Sodick equipment on board has enabled us to better meet the needs of a range of industries in house".

"Before, we often had to outsource work to specialist wire drilling companies, but the new machines mean we can carry out that work here, providing us with more control and ensuring our customers receive the service they need".

"Thus they get their products to market faster and we as a UK company can compete successfully with overseas manufacturers." Potteries Die has been using Sodick equipment for over 15 years.

Dunleavy continued: "In our opinion, purchasing further Sodick machinery is a good investment as the precision and high quality products that they help us to create enable us to offer our clients the best in the market".

"Furthermore, the after care service we receive from Sodi-Tech EDM has ensured that we are able to maintain a smoothly running production line".

"The machines themselves are extremely user friendly and this has helped in us becoming highly skilled and versatile in wire erosion manufacturing techniques".

Nick Leake, Potteries Die general manager, said in summarising: "These additional new Sodick machines mean that we are now at the forefront in providing our customers with the very highest quality of service, designed to be competitive but without compromising in any way on the precise and accurate nature of the work we design and produce.".
