Linear motors smooth wire EDM operation
Applying linear motor drives to wire-cut EDMs raises precision and provide vibration-free operation, while latest control systems reduce energy consumptipon by about 40%.
Sodick' claims that its linear motor technology has revolutionised the AP wire-EDM series of machines, providing vibration free travel, an even higher level of precision and more dynamic machining Furthermore, said Sodick, the new CNC system working in conjunction with the linear motors and the LQ control reduces energy consumption by about 40%

Automatic EDM wire feed system cuts lead times
The high-speed, sensor-controlled, automatic wire feed system on its latest wire EDM is really reducing lead times for multi-aperture work at a spring maker.
Sodick informed Manufacturingtalk that its current AP200L and AP450L models have now been joined by the AP500L, which has been developed to satisfy a manufacturing trend towards large, precision workpieces.
The AP500L wire-EDM offers the following benefits.
* Ease of operation and maintenance - vertically sliding front door and neat layout provide excellent access for operation and maintenance.
* Excellent roundness accuracy - the new double-column structure enhances rigidity while a low-friction cross-roller guide ensures excellent roundness machining.
* Ceramic components - incorporation of Sodick ceramic components provide optimum structure for this ultra-high-precision machine.
* LQ33W power unit aids rapid machining - high-speed, high-efficiency machining is enabled by the new LQ33W power unit - specially developed for high-speed machining.
Specification includes the following.
Maximum travel of X,Y,Z axes (mm) 500 x 400 x 150.
Maximum travel of U,V axes (mm) 35 x 35.
Taper angle +/-7 deg (thickness: 100mm).
Maximum machining size (w x d x h) (mm) 650 x 500 x 100.
Maximum weight of workpiece (kg) 150.
Machine tool dimensions (w x d x h) (mm) 2290 x 1835 x 2230.
* The AP Series AP200L - meeting the needs of 'ultra-precision machining'.
AP450L - tackling large workpieces and incorporating the newly developed LQW1 power unit, integrating 3D solid model data.
