New photorealistic and artistic rendering tool paces the industry

UGS, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, has launched Virtual Studio+, a new companion photorealistic and artistic sketch-based rendering module for Solid Edge Version 16, its industry-leading, value-based 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system for the mainstream product lifecycle management (PLM) market.

Solid Edge Version 16 expands its capability for customers to create photorealistic images by incorporating technology from LightWork Design Ltd.

(Sheffield, UK), an industry leader in rendering solutions.

The new application, Virtual Studio+, includes more material libraries, backgrounds and foregrounds, textures, scenery and light sources (ambient, point, spot, distant and sky) than ever before, delivered with a mainstream modeller.

In addition, the new application supports LightWork's unique sketch-based rendering for creating pencil-drawn artist renditions of CAD geometry for early stage visualisation and concept reviews.

Together these applications provide an ability to better visualise concepts before they are committed to, thus easing the design of complex products by facilitating customer, supplier and departmental communications, while reducing errors and speeding time to market -- yet again improving Solid Edge customer's ability to Design with Insight.

"The delivery of Virtual Studio+ for Solid Edge sets a new bar for photorealistic rendering capability and performance in the mainstream CAD market and enhances our competitive position in consumer products as well as other aesthetically oriented markets," said Dan Staples, director of the Solid Edge business unit.

"With its unique new sketch-based rendering capability Solid Edge delivers a full range of options for concept reviews right through to promotional materials that will appeal to all product designers regardless of industry or specialty." Since the introduction of Rapid Blue complex shape creation software in version 14, Solid Edge has aggressively pursued the consumer products market, successfully servicing customers such as Groupe SEB in France, Hinkley Yachts in the U.S.

and Ricoh in Japan.

The new application will sell for $495 (U.S.) as an add-on to Solid Edge.

UGS will continue to deliver Virtual Studio, Solid Edge's core rendering capability, with Solid Edge for no extra charge, offering customers a choice of solutions and prices to meet their needs.
