UGS has announced that AMF, a leading supplier of integrated, automated solutions for the baking industry, has standardised on Solid Edge.

UGS has announced that AMF, a leading supplier of integrated, automated solutions for the baking industry, has standardised on Solid Edge, UGS' value-based 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system for the mainstream PLM market.

AMF licensed 30 seats of Solid Edge that the company plans to split between its two manufacturing facilities in Richmond, Vancouver, and Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

After an evaluation of Solid Edge, SolidWorks and AutoCad, AMF said the deciding factor for selecting Solid Edge was its design management capabilities, Insight, to manage revision control.

Prior to Solid Edge, AMF used a combination of SolidWorks and AutoCad.

"Product data management was a must for AMF, especially as we communicate between facilities, departments and manage the complexity of our products," said Marc Stringer, CAD coordinator and R and D designer for AMF in Sherbrooke.

"In addition to Insight, what really struck me during our assessment of Solid Edge was its ability to handle advanced sheet metal design in an entire design-through-fabrication workflow, a key element in our manufacturing process".

The Solid Edge team from UGS, Automadesign and Precision CAD/CAM Systems, are currently assisting AMF with the different implementation phases of the project.

Beginning in 2005, all new AMF designs will be created solely in Solid Edge.

"AMF manufactures complex machines and we spent a significant amount of time in understanding their design needs," said Louis-Michel Menard, president of Automadesign.

"Our expertise with Solid Edge combined with AMF's strategic vision will ensure the success of this project".

Automadesign, a certified Solid Edge value-added reseller, is located in Bromont and Ile-des-Soeurs, Quebec.
