Schott Systeme GmbH announce the launch of their IT Developer Network

Enhancing the current programming tools that come ready supplied with their CAD/CAM product Pictures by PC, Schott Systeme GmbH have announced the launch of their dedicated IT developer network Subscribers to the network who pay an annual fee will have access to a large collection of ready made IT tools helping to automate everyday tasks in any small to medium sized company

'Bix' Programming Language.

Since the initial development of their CAD/CAM software Pictures by PC over 20 years ago, Schott Systeme GmbH have included a complete programming language called 'Bix' that enabled users to create custom built routines to automate any number of tasks.

Where Bix differs from many programming languages is its total openness and ability to link to and control other Windows based PC software.

Not only can routines be created to automate the CAD/CAM software itself, but in addition 'Bix' can communicate with any software that supplies an interface for data transfer such as ASCII, DDE, OLE, Active X, ODBC or the like.

This has meant the software can provide a means to link almost any two programmes together, helping with the integration of technical and commercial programmes such as ERP, BDE, PPS, CAD/CAM and FEM.

An increased interest by companies in this ability has thus led to the creation of the IT Developer Network.

Software self help tools using 'Dragees'.

Ideal for those enterprises which cannot afford fully integrated systems or expensive external software advisors, these software development aids or 'Dragees' as they are often better known provide a kind of 'IT self help' for all IT and company staff.

The yearly subscription gives users instant access to an ever increasing list of useful routines, with one of the first being the Schott Systeme 'Info System'.

Software 'Info System'.

The Info System provides a means of attaching keyword information to raster based images such as bitmaps, photos, faxes, designs, sketches and scanned pictures.

Importantly the system does not require the use of databases or a resident document management system.

Instead, and to simplify the process of searching for documents, the searching system uses Microsoft index server (commencing from Windows 2000 onwards), and with a data set of around 500 Gigabytes, documents can be listed and correlated within approximately 5 seconds.

The simplicity of this system stems from the use of XMP data, with the keywords and file descriptions being inserted directly into the document.

By containing such data directly within the document, searches can also be undertaken on local machines not connected to the network, albeit with a slight degradation in the search speed.

Creating a company 'Knowledge Base'.

The scope for this tool extends far beyond just a simple search though, albeit in the short term this ability to quickly search for and find such documents will save considerable man hours within a small to medium sized firm.

However with an entire company regularly adding information to its documents in this manner, the longer term benefit is really the ability for the company to build an entire 'Knowledge Database' for all users to gain benefit from.

Used in this way, in an instant any employee can search for and find a wide range of documents relating to a specified topic.
