Freeform Feature Recognition
Schott Systeme Shows New 'Freeform Feature Recognition' at EuroMold
Ideal for mould formers and anyone required to machine complex freeform geometry, German based Schott Systeme has developed a new form of feature recognition especially for freeform geometry.
Providing a new and innovative approach to 3D machining, and unlike typical solid feature recognition for simple pockets and bosses, these new tools help find more complex features experienced with freeform surface and solid parts.
Included as standard within their CAD/CAM software 'Pictures by PC', Schott Systeme cite a good example of its use.
Firstly taking a complex 3D surface model that cannot be easily repaired to form a solid, typical of models received by mold formers, then trying to find and select all of the concave radius fillet surfaces within a certain size range to machine.
Depending on the model, this could take considerable time.
Removing the need to manually search for and select all these surfaces, Pictures by PC will automatically interrogate the model and find the geometry that fits these specific critera.
A large number of other search critera are also available, for example to automatically shut off holes and to find surfaces within a certain angle range.
In short, this method of feature recognition represents a new way for CNC programmers to approach the machining of freeform parts and takes a lot of effort out of finding and selecting geometry to machine.
