A management buy out of a Pan European company has decided to move to Rotherham, to take advantage of the borough's great location, excellent transport links and skilled workforce.

SP Containers is a speciality food retail packaging company - a management buyout from Swedish firm, A and R Cartons - led by SP managing director Paul Nixon, formerly A and R divisional director for the UK The company makes paper-based packaging, formed using specialist coated paperboards, for everything from containers in fast-food outlets to ice cream tubs in supermarkets

The firm initially settled in Nottingham but, due to operational issues, opted to check out the prospects in South Yorkshire.

Paul Nixon had heard about the business support services available from Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO) - regeneration arm of the Metropolitan Borough Council - and decided to give the team a call.

Paul Nixon said: "I contacted Andrew Nettleton at RiDO.

He showed me 15 different properties and I chose Chesterton Court at Eastwood".

"Literally three weeks later, with RiDO's help, I was set up in my new premises".

"Since then RiDO has helped me with employment contacts through their JOBMatch service and networking through the Buy Local service, and has also put me in touch with other support agencies, including Business Link.

When you move to a new area, you generally know very little about the business support available.

RiDO gave me everything I needed, very promptly and efficiently." SP Containers brings with it a range of high profile customers, including Marks and Spencer, the Tesco Finest range and, closer to home, Tommy Tuckers Popcorn, based in Worksop, north Notts".

"Its paper-based packaging is proving extremely popular and it is now working on fully recyclable packaging as consumers become increasingly environmentally aware".

"Paul Nixon said: "We can package pretty much anything.

The majority of our clients work within the food retail sector, so we make everything from ice-cream containers to shortbread boxes.

We also have a contract to provide the European fast food chain, 7-11, with all of its containers".

"The recyclable products we are currently researching will open another lucrative market for us, and we're looking at the packaging requirements of several other markets, including non-food." RiDO business development manager Andrew Nettleton said: "RiDO is all about supporting the business community, which helps create more employment and general prosperity within the greater community".

"And it's particularly satisfying when we help external companies successfully relocate into the borough.".
