Showroom machine tools to be used by students
With some GBP 500,000 worth of CNC sliding headstock lathes and CAD/CAM systems in its showroom, a UK supplier is making them available to students for coursework.
Students taking AVCE Engineering at Chellaston School, near Derby, are being assisted in the coursework by sliding-headstock lathe and bar magazine specialist, Star Micronics GB, Melbourne.
Located four miles from the school, the firm has GBP 500,000 worth of advanced, computer-controlled turning machines in the showroom as well as CADCAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) stations that the students can use for project work.
Commented Bob Hunt, managing director, "We approached the school's engineering department through the Derby Enterprise Business Partnership to see how we could support the work being done by the students, mindful that we have a lot of production engineering kit here that is often not fully utilised for customer demonstrations on Mondays and Fridays".
"We have drawn up a programme for the 15- and 16-year-olds to visit us on those days to work with our engineering manager, Stephen Totty, and applications engineer, Chas Bilkhu".
"During the sessions they will be given hands-on training so that they can fulfil the practical part of their course, which this year is to design a water sprinkler for the garden and then mill-turn the parts on our sliding-headstock lathes." * About AVCE Engineering - AVCE Engineering stands for Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education in Engineering.
Replacing the old BTEC National Diploma, it is a broad programme for students that have identified engineering as their preferred career route.
The two-year course covers a range of engineering related disciplines including materials, science, mathematics, electronics, mechanics, CAD, and engineering in business.
It is a good mixture of academic and practical engineering, with students attending work experience placements at the end of their first year.
