VMC has higher rigidity, faster
acceleration
Higher levels of rigidity, fast acceleration and rapid traverse rates for spindle positioning and simultaneous five-axis operation feature a modular nachining centre for wet or dry machining.
The Hermle C40 vertical machining centre brings new levels of rigidity, fast acceleration and rapid traverse rates for spindle positioning and simultaneous five-axis machining By using a modular-based construction technique the machine can be specified as a 'V' with a rigid plain table, or 'U' with options of a NC-swivelling/rotary table, an NC-swivelling rotary table with two position workholding or with pallet system for extended cell-based low manning production

Complex testpiece settled machining centre choice
The need to machine highly intricate mould and electrode details to short lead time schedules, led Pascoe Engineering to challenge would-be high speed M-C suppliers with a complex testpiece.
Now available from StarragHeckert UK of Brackley, the C40 is a modified gantry style machine which has been patented by Hermle using a high wall mineral casting to maximise stability and minimise vibration while maintaining low thermal conductivity.
This design also enables maximum benefits to be obtained from wide guideway spacing ratios giving rigid and high performance dynamic traverse rates and uncompromised positioning and profiling accuracy capability.
As a result, acceleration rates of 10m/sec2 can be achieved through direct high torque motors to provide maximum traverse rates of 60m/min over the working envelope of 850mm in X, 700mm in Y and 500mm in Z.

HMCs provide new slant on high speed machining
Dynamic high speed machining centres have T-type slant bed to provide excellent swarf control for wet or dry machining of steels, CI and aluminium.
Heavy duty HMCs offer even less down time
Breaking new ground for a machine tool company is a range of four axis heavy duty HMCs for the five-side machining of components weighing up to 8 tonnes and edge lengths up to 3000mm.
For A and C axes Hermle's patented high torque drive system is used giving higher efficiency and the elimination of any effects of backlash.
Carried on the crossbeam is a choice of spindle assembly specifications.
These cover 36kW/10,000 revs/min, 15kW/18,000 rev/min, 23kW/28,000 rev/min or 26kW/40,000 rev/min giving users the options of different combinations from high torque with 200Nm available for hardmetal type machining operations or high speed for non-ferrous parts.
With the two mid-range spindle variants available with torque levels of 130Nm and 79Nm respectively, different user machining demands can also be accommodated.
Each spindle variant is supplied from a 38 tool pocket magazine protectively housed behind the working area with a 'chip to chip' time of 4.5 secs.
In addition, tool magazine capacities of 123 or 200 units can be ordered as options.
In keeping with Hermle's high specification build policy, control is through Heidenhain's latest iTNC 530 control which provides high speed block processing and highly dynamic 3-D interpolation for tasks such as mould and die and electrode machining.
When the C40 is specified in the 'V' format with its rigid clamping table, the maximum clamping surface is 1070mm by 700mm and table loads up to two tonnes can be accepted.
In the two universal 'U' machine variants, an NC-swivelling rotary table can be specified with a 1000mm diameter tilting trunnion and 800mm diameter clamping surface which is able to accept a maximum loading of 1400kg.
The swivel range is +25 deg to -100 deg in the A-axis which is fully programmable up to 25 revs/min and the rotary C-axis speed is up to 65 rev/min via a direct torque drive motor.
For users more interested in higher production from a five-axis machine, the Hermle C40U can also be specified with an NC tilting trunnion with twin 280mm rotary tables which are able to index at speeds up to 40 revs/min through a high torque tandem drive.
The tilting A-axis has a range of +115 deg which can be actuated at a speed of up to 50 revs/min.
In addition, to suit specialist user requirements, the Hermle C40 can be supplied with wet or dry machining packages including turbo filtration, paper ribbon filtration or sieve basket.
A special graphite or composite material machining package is also available for electrode production.
