A steel's technical properties are by far the most important factor when determining the choice of supplier, as well as expertise, speedy deliveries, customised volumes and formats, says a report.

Steel which is sold and delivered with expertise That's the message from a recent survey by the Scandinavian high-strength structural steel manufacturer SSAB Swedish Steel

A steel's technical properties are by far the most important factor when determining the choice of supplier.

However, expertise, speedy deliveries, customised volumes and formats, and being easily accessible for service are also all of equal importance.

To meet requirements for this double need, the company is now launching its Business Steel concept.

The survey shows that the role of material supplier has changed.

The choice of supplier is determined as much by the ability to provide know-how and support in the development of material, production and products as by the properties of the material supplied.

Business Steel is a direct response to the needs now signalled by the market.

"We are currently bringing together all of our expertise; this is now being offered to our customers.

In addition, we're providing more opportunities to purchase our advanced high strength steels in finished formats," says Anders Elfgren, marketing director at SSAB Swedish Steel.

"We can therefore give our customers a double benefit.

Not only do they receive high strength structural steels - they also benefit from additional services which can help them develop their businesses." Customers obtain access to specialist skills, technical and business analysis, advice and a well-developed distribution network with short delivery times.

A concrete example here is the opportunity to reduce the level of capital tied up in stock.

"We can often arrive at solutions which reduce the number of steel types that are required in the customer's production operations and which gives faster material deliveries," asserts Mr.Elfgren.

"These merits naturally have a positive effect on a company's income statement." An additional advantage is SSAB's Technical Specialists, who can be included as a resource in customers' product development.

Customers thereby gain access to the market's latest research findings and expertise with regard to steel, and from the outset they can feel secure that they have made the best possible choice of material.

Beginning in May, Business Steel is to be launched throughout Europe.

The concept consists of a number of components, including the offer of training, free of charge, by correspondence.

The name of this training programme is the Business Steel School, which will provide practical advice in conjunction with useful information about steel and steel structures.

SSAB Swedish Steel is currently investing in two completely new production lines, thereby increasing its capacity for cut-to-format steel sheet.

This, in combination with new distribution solutions, significantly improves service to customers in Europe.
