For the fifth consecutive year, the Swedish Steel Prize - the international industry accolade for design and product development - is being awarded.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Swedish Steel Prize - the international industry accolade for design and product development - is being awarded Four designs based on high strength steel will be nominated for the final prize ceremony, to be held in the Blue Hall of Stockholm's City Hall on 26 November

Designers, steel experts and executives from around the world will be present.

The Swedish Steel Prize was instituted by SSAB Tunnplat.

The Swedish Steel Prize is now firmly established as the international engineering award for users of leading-edge high strength steels.

The Prize jury has examined the merits of a large number of designs over the five years in which the contest has been held.

The design teams behind all of the entries have shown great skill in utilising the potential and opportunities of high strength steel to come up with lighter, stronger products.

"We can see that more and more companies throughout the world opt for high strength steel for the development of new products, not least because of the material's environmental advantages," says Curt Johansson, Managing Director of SSAB Tunnplat.

"The Swedish Steel Prize acts as a showcase for the material's merits and aims to be a catalyst for modern industrial design - and it has succeeded in doing both.

It has also contributed to a greater exchange of design ideas between companies and across borders.

The entire manufacturing process can be made more efficient through the use of high strength steel." The event's organisation committee has chosen the Blue Hall as the venue for the fifth anniversary celebrations, which will be an appropriate prelude to the Nobel Prize festivities a few weeks later.

Earlier in the day, seminars will be held on engineering design, design materials, the environment and the potential of high strength steel, with speakers from around the world.

The contest is open to any entrant using high strength steel in their designs, irrespective of steel manufacturer.

The application period for this year's Prize expires on 5 August, but a design received by 30 April will guarantee the applicant two places at the prizegiving ceremony.
