Cold-rolled steels have high strength

A range of cold-rolled steels offer a wide choice of properties obtained through hardening techniques applied through a special rolling process, said a Swedish steel plant.

SSAB Tunnplat in Sweden is now launching its 'Docol Hard' range of advanced high strength, cold-rolled steels with various combinations of properties.

The steels broaden the range of cold-rolled steels and give wide opportunities for developing new, more efficient products, said th company.

Docol Hard combines strength and thickness in a way that gives the designer totally new scope for product development.

The key to the properties of the new steels is the additional hardening achieved by a special rolling process.

The new steels are included in the SSAB Swedish Steel range of advanced high strength, cold-rolled steels.

"Docol Hard expands our range of advanced high strength steels and broadens the field of application for cold-rolled steels," said Karl-Inge Nilsson, product manager for Docol in the Sheet Steel Division of SSAB Swedish Steel.

"Furniture, containers and safety parts are some of the areas in which the steels have already contributed to better and more effective products".

Docol Hard is produced in three product groups, with different combinations of strength and thickness.

* Weight reductions up to 50% - Docol Hard 450Y-750Y has a minimum yield strength range of 450-700N/mm2 and is characterized by being very thin at 0.28-1.0mm.

This group of Docol Hard supersedes conventional steels of the same or lower strength and offers new opportunities for forming high strength products with thin, sleek lines.

Weight reductions of up to 50% and cost savings of up to 25% are attainable.

Typical applications include light fittings, white goods and furniture such as shelving.

* High yield strengths - the next group of Docol Hard has higher yield strengths in the range of 850-1000N/mm2 and thicknesses between 1.5 and 4.0mm.

Lightweight containers, load-bearing beams, tubes and profiles for the building industry, and various types of mechanisms such as seatbelt holders are examples of applications for which these steels are well suited.

Mechanisms generally require the close tolerances on thickness that Docol Hard offers.

* High tensile strengths and hardness - Docol Hard is also produced in the very highest strengths available, with tensile strengths between 1500 and 1700N/mm2.

These steels are among the strongest and hardest in the world, and are produced in thicknesses of 0.42 to 1.92mm.

These steels are suitable for applications in which the products are exposed to heavy wear or blows and shocks, and offer scope for developing products such as special low-weight containers.
