A grinding machine has been designed specifically to meet the demands of machining micro-tools as small as 0.4mm and does not exert grinding forces on the work piece.

Machining micro parts is recognised as one of the most difficult of manufacturing tasks Tolerances can be difficult to maintain, components are fragile and prone to breakage, handling can be complex

Schneeberger has launched a grinding machine specifically to meet the demands of machining micro-tools.

The Sirius machine has been designed specifically to meet the exacting demands of grinding very small tools (down to 0.4mm).

Tool clamping has been designed so that grinding forces are not exerted on the component: the clamping chucks are fixed axially in the dividing head but are allowed to float radially.

Concentricity is ensured with a prismatic steady rest and an additional rest under the grinding zone.

Concentricity is better than one micron (0.00004in).

The steady rests are set up with a camera, which includes a ring light, which is quick mounted during the set up procedure.

The 'razor sharp', enlarged picture is displayed on the control monitor.

Loading is automatic with a 6-axis robot.

Fully automated, lights out machining can be implemented easily when the machine is equipped with a flexible 2-18 pallet loader.

A rigid machine, the Sirius has the following features.

* A heavy duty, 9kW motor with an HSK80 spindle for wheels up to 300mm with a speed range of 1000-6000 rev/min.

* Control is by the Fanuc 160 iB with 15in TFT colour monitor.

* Digitally regulated axes provide high speed traversing with smooth continuous interpolation of 5 axes.

* X-axis is 425mm with a resolution of 10nm with linear motor drive.

* Y-axis is 280mm with a resolution of 10nm with linear motor drive.

* Z-axis is 280mm with a resolution of 10nm with linear motor drive.

* The A axis has a direct measuring system with a resolution of 0.000045 deg; B-axis with +/-120 deg with a resolution of 0.000045 deg.

Commenting, general manager Chris Harford, said: "Schneeberger is at the forefront of the tool and cutter grinder industry.

As a company, we have always invested heavily in designing and developing machines and systems which will enable our customers to improve their manufacturing processes and therefore their profitability.

As specialists in grinding, particularly complex grinding tasks, we are well placed to offer customers the ideal grinding machine for the manufacture of micro- tools.".
