UK order intake for Schneeberger tool and cutter grinding machines rose by 46% during the last quarter of 2007, with orders coming from tooling manufacturers and tooling users.

Grinding machine specialists Schneeberger reported an order intake of over 46% during the last quarter, and 2007 was the best year's trading in the UK since the Measham-based subsidiary was founded Orders have come from the company's traditional markets, with the aerospace, tool and cutter, plastics and woodworking each making a significant contribution to the increase in orders, said Schneeberger

Machines supplied include a number of the heavy duty Corvus broach grinding machine and the popular Norma tool and cutter grinder.

General manager of Schneeberger in the UK, Chris Harford, said: "The UK manufacturing industry is demanding more than just a machine.

Schneeberger has proved over and again the excellence of its application engineering ability.

This is important to all customers, but is crucial for the very competitive - and often very complex tool and cutter sector of the engineering industry.

Customers ranging from those making special tools to those manufacturing primarily standard ranges have found our application engineers are able to give them the competitive edge, and the improved profitability, they need".

Director of Thames Valley Saws, Jeremy Ridgeley, commented: "The Schneeberger was our only choice.

It is the only tool and cutter grinder which gives us absolute flexibility combined with complete accessibility to its capabilities".

Ridgeley said that his company needed a machine that could deliver flexibility but it needed the machine supplier to be equally as flexible.

He said that Schneeberger was the only company that could demonstrate an all- round capability.

He said that even under the pressure of exhibition conditions, Schneeberger was willing to demonstrate the machine to Thames Valley Saw, which brought a one-off tool to trial.

Ridgeley said he could not find any other company prepared to do that.

* Wide range of options - the wide range of options available on the Schneebergers lend themselves to the easy tailoring of a standard machine for specific applications, even where batches vary from medium/high volume to one offs.

For example, the sophisticated but easy to manage automatic tool loading system enables 'lights out' grinding whilst leaving the machine cost effective for prototyping and manufacturing specials.

In addition, the proprietary Quinto software - so easy it can be taught to an apprentice in only a couple of hours, said Schneeberger to manufacturingtalk.com - is a very flexible and easy to use system from the earliest stage of design through to completed grinding, part measurement and even marking.

Jeff Smith at Leicester-based A and S Tooling, said: "Using the Schneeberger tool and cutter grinder, we can look at jobs in a completely different light.

Installing the machine has completely changed the company, opening important new areas of work and allowing us to become a much more sophisticated, capable, and, of course, profitable business.".
