X-ray inspection system is fast and precise

A S and S Inspection product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team May 14, 2007

The RAYCON range of X-ray product inspection systems from S+S Inspection uses a lower power X-ray source but provides enhanced image processing at higher throughput speeds than the previous model.

The new RAYCON system detects both metallic and non-metallic product contamination and identifies missing, broken or under weight product with a weighing accuracy of +/-1%.

Four models are currently available to accommodate products up to 400 mm wide and 200 mm high.

Systems for smaller or larger products are available to special order.

The stainless steel housing, sealed to IP65, has been designed fore easy cleaning.

The built-in touch-screen LCD monitor is sealed to IP66 for reliable image inspection and machine set-up and operation.

A high performance industrial PC with the QNX real-time operating system provides the platform for the advanced image processing software.

The RAYCON system is designed specifically for final inspection of packaged products, including aluminium coated or metallised film packaging.

Simultaneous inspection of diverse products and packages does not require resetting the system, a once-only "image learn" of the products is all that is needed.

Valid products lying diagonally across the belt or out of position do not trigger a false reject and it is even possible to simultaneously inspect parallel product lines running completely different products.

A pusher or air blast unit reject mechanism is available with lockable reject container.

Even at increased throughput speeds of up to 600 units per minute, the RAYCON maintains excellent image processing.

It operates a very low power X-ray source of 50 or 80 KV, meets EC directive 1999/29EC for machines inspecting foods and food ingredients and requires no special precautions for installation.

The RAYCON inspection system provides a high level of quality assurance by detecting not only metallic contaminants but also a wide range of non-metallic materials including glass, ceramics, stones, rubber, bone and some plastics.

Foil and metallic packaging, such as foil containers used for ready-meals, do not affect the inspection process and salt and moisture content of the product do not compromise the inspection process.

The advanced image processing and display enables out of specification product to be easily identified.

Typically incorrect fills, missing or broken items and malformed product can be detected, as well as misshapen packs and flavour clumps.

Recording and archiving of inspection data is fully compliant with IFS and HACCP.

The new system is available for immediate delivery and can be combined with the S+S modular design conveyor systems to provide a flexible product inspection solution precisely tailored to specific products and manufacturing environments to meet the most demanding quality assurance needs of the packaging industry.
